A Missive on the Massive

Seth Godin is a weird guy. His latest book, We Are All Weird is likewise, but very intriguing nonetheless. I just downloaded it to my Kindle and I am about half way through. Seth always inspires me to think and that is a good reason to read him….his blog and his books. He always seems to come at things from a different, weird, angle. But, hey, you know what? I’m not exactly all that normal myself. I graduated from Law School, even practised the profession for a while, and here I sit writing eco-centric and anti-materialist blog posts while living in Costa Rica and selling vacation packages….go figure. I guess according to the book, I am rich (even though I certainly don’t feel it where most would say it counts….in that bulge that sits in my back pocket). Rich in the sense that I have carved out the ability to make weird choices. Choices that make me happy….even if they seem a bit adrift from the mainstream. Seth’s premise in the book is that that is the direction towards which society is headed….like it or not. Those who would tend to a more assembly line mass production keep it in line kind of perspective are a dying breed….like the dinosaurs. Only rather than a meteoric event taking them out, they are dying a slow and painful death….that is unless they are willing to jump ship and succumb to the weirdness. Case in point for me is my current rail against mass tourism. I am learning more and more that mass mainstream kind of tourism is not so good for the planet. It is a much easier sell than the other kind of weird Eco-tourism that actually tries to do some good for people and planet. But maybe that’s just because I am not marketing to the weirdos….those who think like me. It seems easier to take the path of least resistance, even though that path seems to be as crowded as ever these days. That is the paradox that Seth speaks of in the book….that is, even though we find weirdness all around us we tend to want to gravitate toward the mass production status quo….it is ingrained in us….since, after all, that is how our fathers and grandfathers and so on did it. So there is that little voice inside our heads that tries to direct us towards conformity, even when all the evidence suggests….go for the weird! When folks call me and ask for a mass production assembly line sort of vacation don’t be surprised to hear my weird Eco-tourism will save the world speech! Thanks Seth for helping me remember to keep waiving the weird flag, with honor.

Seth Godin es un tipo raro. Su último libro, We’re All Weird, es lo mismo, pero muy interesante, no obstante. Yo sólo lo descargan en mi Kindle y estoy a medio camino a través. Seth siempre me inspira a pensar y que es una buena razón para leerlo …. su blog y sus libros. Él siempre parece venir las cosas desde una diferente, ángulo extraño,. Pero, hey, ¿sabes qué? No estoy exactamente todo lo que normal. Me gradué de la Escuela de Leyes, incluso ejercido la profesión por un tiempo, y aquí estoy sentado escribiendo entradas de blog eco-céntrica y anti-materialista, mientras vivía en Costa Rica y la venta de paquetes vacacionales …. imagínate. Supongo que según el libro, yo soy rico (aunque ciertamente no se siente que la mayoría diría cuenta …. en ese bulto que se sienta en el bolsillo de atrás). Rica en el sentido de que se han labrado la capacidad de tomar decisiones extrañas. Las opciones que me hacen feliz …. aunque parezcan un poco a la deriva de la corriente principal. Premisa de Seth en el libro es que esa es la dirección hacia la que la sociedad está a cargo …. nos guste o no. Aquellos que tienden a una producción en masa de montaje más que mantener la línea en la línea de la perspectiva de género son una especie en extinción …. como los dinosaurios. Sólo en vez de un evento meteórico sacarlos, se están muriendo una muerte lenta y dolorosa …. que es menos que estén dispuestos a abandonar el barco y caer en la extravagancia. El caso en cuestión para mí es mi ferrocarril actual en contra del turismo de masas. Estoy aprendiendo más y más ese tipo de masa convencional del turismo no es tan bueno para el planeta. Se trata de una venta mucho más fácil que el otro tipo de extrañas Eco-turismo, que en realidad trata de hacer algo bueno para la gente y el planeta. Pero tal vez eso es sólo porque no soy de marketing para la gente rara …. los que piensan como yo. Parece más fácil tomar el camino de menor resistencia, a pesar de que el camino parece estar tan concurrido como siempre en estos días. Esa es la paradoja de que Seth habla en el libro …. es decir, a pesar de que nos encontramos con extrañeza a nuestro alrededor, tendemos a querer a gravitar hacia el status de masas estado de la producción …. está arraigada en nosotros … . ya que, después de todo, así es como nuestros padres y abuelos y así sucesivamente lo hizo. Por lo que es esa pequeña voz dentro de nuestra cabeza que intenta que nos guíe a la conformidad, aun cuando toda la evidencia sugiere …. ir a por el raro! Cuando la gente me llame y pregunte por una especie de producción en masa de la línea de montaje vacation no se sorprendió al escuchar mi extraña Eco-turismo salvará el mundo habla! Gracias por ayudarme a Seth recuerde que debe mantener la renuncia a la bandera extraña, con honor.
