Burning Down the House

Wars and rumors of wars. Those have been a part of U.S. culture since its founding. Why is that? Why is the U.S. so hell-bent on being at war with the world? Right now it seems that in addition to being at war with the entire Islamic world, the U.S. is at war with itself. But this is not a war fought with bombs and bullets, but with words, power and money. The powers at be seem quite prepared to take the country to the brink of bankruptcy in order to accomplish their respective and diametrically opposite goals. All this political posturing with regard to the “debt ceiling” is making for some high and potentially irreversibly damaging drama. It is interesting to watch, but belies an underlying problem that unless fixed may be what finally brings the U.S. down from its lofty perch as the world’s most dominant economic power. The problem is that the country has become downright ungovernable. The public seems to want divided government as an insurance policy that insures some level of moderation. However, what we are seeing is that divided government can lead to absolutely nothing being done even when circumstances demand action. I sincerely suspect that most republicans in the Congress harbor the unspoken opinion that allowing the U.S. government to default on its debt is the best way to get Obama out of office and a republican in. That has never happened before in U.S. history (a default). But it could now. And even if it doesn’t a significant amount of damage has already been done by simply allowing things to get so close to the brink.

Going back to my point about wars. The U.S. has been involved in several throughout its history that statistics show bear a direct correlation with the amount of debt that the country has taken on. Those are the Civil War, World Wars 1 and 2, the so-called “Cold War” and the current War on Terror. If you look close at the graphic above, it is fairly evident that points in the nation’s history when the deficit as a percentage of GDP was at its highest points correlate very nicely with those wars. That of course makes perfect sense as war is quite costly. I guess war is a natural consequence of superpower-dom. Once you are the one at the top of the hill, everyone else tends to want to knock you down. When a nation becomes a bit too big and powerful, or a corporation, or even an individual for that matter, the consequences of a fall are said to be too great to bear. That nation, or corporation, or individual is too big to fail. Well, guess what? They aren’t and they will unless they decide to take a good introspective look at themselves and their real position in the grand scheme of things. The universe may be too big to fail, but you never will be. The lesson to be learned? Stop trying so hard to defend your position and power, i.e., stop being at war with everything and everyone that thinks differently, and start being at peace with yourself and the world. It costs a lot less.

Guerras y rumores de guerras. Esas han sido parte de la cultura de EE.UU. desde su fundación. ¿Por qué? ¿Por qué es los EE.UU. para empeñados en estar en guerra con el mundo? Ahora parece que además de estar en guerra con todo el mundo islámico, los EE.UU. está en guerra consigo mismo. Pero esto no es una guerra con bombas y balas, sino con palabras, poder y dinero. Los poderes a que parecen muy dispuestos a llevar al país al borde de la bancarrota con el fin de lograr sus objetivos respectivos y diametralmente opuesta. Todo esto una postura política con respecto a la “techo de la deuda” está haciendo para un drama de alta y potencialmente perjudicial irreversible. Es interesante ver, pero oculta un problema de fondo que a menos que fija puede ser lo que finalmente trae los EE.UU. hacia abajo desde su posición elevada, como el poder dominante en el mundo económico. El problema es que el país se ha convertido en absolutamente ingobernable. El público parece que quiere un gobierno dividido como una póliza de seguros que asegura un cierto nivel de moderación. Sin embargo, lo que estamos viendo es que el gobierno dividido puede conducir a nada se está haciendo, incluso cuando las circunstancias lo exigen acción. Sinceramente, sospecho que la mayoría de los republicanos en el puerto Congreso la opinión tácita de que permitir que el gobierno de EE.UU. a dejar de pagar su deuda es la mejor manera de llegar Obama fuera de la oficina y un republicano dentro. Eso nunca ha sucedido antes en la historia de los EE.UU. (por defecto) . Pero ahora podría. E incluso si no una cantidad significativa de daño ya está hecho simplemente permitir que las cosas tan cerca al borde.

Volviendo a mi punto de vista sobre las guerras. Los EE.UU. ha estado involucrado en varios a lo largo de su historia, las estadísticas muestran que tienen una correlación directa con la cantidad de deuda que el país ha tomado. Esas son la Guerra Civil, Guerras Mundiales 1 y 2, la llamada “Guerra Fría” y la actual guerra contra el terror. Si se mira de cerca el gráfico anterior, es bastante evidente que los puntos en la historia de la nación, cuando el déficit como porcentaje del PIB fue en sus puntos más altos se correlacionan muy bien con las guerras. Que por supuesto tiene mucho sentido que la guerra es muy costoso. Creo que la guerra es una consecuencia natural de la superpotencia-dom. Una vez que usted es el que en la parte superior de la colina, todo el mundo tiende a querer tumbar. Cuando una nación llega a ser un poco demasiado grande y poderoso, o una corporación, o incluso a una persona para el caso, las consecuencias de una caída se dice que es demasiado grande para soportarlo. Esa nación, o una corporación o individuo es demasiado grande para quebrar. Bueno, ¿adivinen qué? Que no son y van a menos que decidan tomar una buena mirada introspectiva a sí mismos y su posición real en el gran esquema de las cosas. El universo puede ser demasiado grande para quebrar, pero nunca lo será. La lección que debemos aprender. Dejar de intentar tan duro para defender su posición y poder, es decir, dejar de estar en guerra con todo y con todo el mundo que piensa diferente, y empezar a estar en paz con uno mismo y del mundo. Cuesta mucho menos.
