Connectedness

I was watching a program last night showing an old Michael Jackson concert. It was old, I believe from the mid-80′s and appeared to have been filmed somewhere in Europe, perhaps Germany. There was an interesting point in the film where Jackson calls for security to remove a bug that had made its way onto the stage. He implored the guard to be gentle and “don’t kill it.” You could just blow that off and say it was silly and overly sentimental, maybe a bit showy. But I really think there was more to it than that. I believe this seemingly trivial moment reflects Jackson’s view of being connected with the universe. He often lost himself in that connection. His music, concerts and general world view transcended nationality, ethnicity or religion. The guy was astronomically talented, but what appeals to me even more than that was Jackson’s sense of being connected, of being a true global citizen.

I guess there are two ways to look at our existence. One way is that there is a separation between me and everything else. I would call that an entity view. That there is a clear demarcation between me and the universe around me. The other way is that there is no real distinction between me and what appears to the immediate senses to lie beyond me. I will call that a connectedness view. The former view gives rise to the mode of thinking that I have needs and everything separate from me should be looked upon as a potential source of supply. When my needs are not met to the sense of my satisfaction, I have pain, I suffer, or I fight to make the world supply them, often to the detriment of the supply source. The other view would hold that the relationship between “me” and the world is a symbiotic one. Here in Costa Rica we have cloud forests where some trees are inhabited by thousands of different plants that live in symbiotic relationship with the tree. The tree is not damaged, but helped, by these plants and vice versa. According to the connectedness view we live in similar relationship with the world, the universe. It is there to support and nurture us and vice versa. I submit that the entity view gives rise to most of the harm that occurs between man and nature. Nature is simply there to be exploited to support man as an entity. The entity view also gives rise to things like national boundaries, political and religious discord, wars, and a host of other things that serve to threaten the very thing that we are striving to preserve, humanity.

If all people held the connectedness view, then the world would likely be a much safer and peaceful place. But they don’t and never will. Therefore, the dilemma in life is maintaining some sense of balance in these two views. Living in harmony to the extent possible, but also realizing that self-preservation is an ever present reality in a world where most hold an entity view. Maybe the ultimate and most absurd idea that arises from an entity view is that of slavery. That one man should have the right to own another as property. Lincoln was willing to allow 618,000 die in an effort to stamp out that twisted view of reality. A true connectedness view would hold that all living things have inalienable rights. Those rights arise from our very connectedness and that arises from the artistry of the ultimate designer and author of this universe. Lincoln believed that, Jackson believed that, do you believe it?

Estaba viendo una película de Michael Jackson concierto de anoche. Es viejo, creo que a partir de mediados de los años 80 y parecía haber sido filmada en algún lugar de Europa, tal vez a Alemania. Hubo un punto interesante en la película donde Jackson pide seguridad para recojer un insecto que estaba en el escenario. , Imploró la protección para ser suave y “no acabar con él.” Uno puede volar eso y decir que era tonto y sentimental demasiado, tal vez un poco llamativa. Pero realmente creo que era más que eso. Yo creo que este momento aparentemente trivial refleja la visión de Jackson de estar conectado con el universo. A menudo se pierde en ese sentido. Su música, conciertos y visión general del mundo trascendido su nacionalidad, etnia o religión. El tipo era astronómicamente talentoso, pero lo que me atrae mucho más que eso fue el sentido de Jackson de estar conectado, de ser un ciudadano del mundo real.

Creo que hay dos maneras de ver nuestra existencia. Una de ellas es que hay una separación entre mí y todo lo demás. Yo llamaría a eso una visión entidad. Que existe una demarcación clara entre mi persona y el universo que me rodea. La otra forma es que no hay distinción real entre mí y lo que aparece a los sentidos inmediatos a mentir más allá de mí. Yo llamo a esto un punto de vista conexión. El primer punto de vista da lugar a la forma de pensar que tienen necesidades y todo separado de mí debe ser visto como una fuente potencial de abastecimiento. Cuando mis necesidades no se satisfacen con el sentido de mi satisfacción, tengo dolor, sufro, o que luchar para que el mundo los suministros, a menudo en detrimento de la fuente de alimentación. El otro punto de vista, sostengo que la relación entre el “yo” y el mundo es una simbiosis. Aquí en Costa Rica tenemos bosques de niebla, donde algunos árboles están habitados por miles de plantas diferentes que viven en relación simbiótica con el árbol. El árbol no está dañado, pero ayudó, por estas plantas, y viceversa. De acuerdo con la opinión de conexión que vivir en una relación similar con el mundo, el universo. Está ahí para apoyar y nutrir a nosotros y viceversa. Yo sostengo que el punto de vista la entidad, da lugar a la mayor parte del daño que se produce entre el hombre y la naturaleza. La naturaleza es simplemente allí para ser explotada para apoyar al hombre como una entidad. La vista de la entidad también da lugar a cosas como las fronteras nacionales, la discordia política y religiosa, las guerras, y un montón de otras cosas que sirven para poner en peligro la misma cosa que estamos tratando de preservar la humanidad.

Si toda la gente de la opinión de la conexión, entonces el mundo sería probablemente un lugar mucho más seguro y pacífico. Pero no y nunca lo hará. Por lo tanto, el dilema en la vida es mantener un cierto sentido de equilibrio en estos dos puntos de vista. Vivir en armonía con la medida de lo posible, pero también darse cuenta de que la auto-preservación es una realidad siempre presente en un mundo donde la mayoría tienen una opinión entidad. Tal vez la idea definitiva y absurda que surge de una visión de la entidad es el de la esclavitud. Que un hombre debe tener el derecho a poseer al otro como propiedad. Lincoln estaba dispuesto a permitir que 618.000 mueren en un esfuerzo por acabar con esa visión torcida de la realidad. Una visión verdadera conexión que sostienen que todos los seres vivos tienen derechos inalienables. Esos derechos se derivan de nuestra conexión muy y que surge de la habilidad artística del diseñador y autor último de este universo. Lincoln creía que, Jackson cree que, ¿lo crea?
