On a less Than Serious Note

Package Costa Rica is interviewing right now as Pablo is leaving for bigger and better things. Who can blame him? He has been a trustworthy, honorable and hard working employee. I will say the best I have had here in Costa Rica and I wish him extremely well. I interviewed an expat the other day, around the same age as me. Actually came to Costa Rica around the same time as me. As I sat there listening to his Costa Rica saga, in the immortal words of Yogi Berra, it definitely sounded like ”deja vu all over again.” It inspired that spell of sappiness yesterday morning that came out as my Ode to the Expat. Yea, well, never claimed to be a Walt Whitman wannabe. All that got me thinking this morning that it just seems that sometimes people take life a little too seriously. Me included. Every once in a while it pays to just lighten up a bit and open your eyes to see how humorous life really is. And the payoff is even greater when you see how humorous you really are. In a quest not to take life too seriously, it’s a great idea to start with yourself. It hurts a lot less to laugh and poke fun of yourself rather than let others do it for you. And folks that take themselves far too seriously are usually the choicest victims of late night comedy routines and mean-spirited office cooler chit-chat. Really, if you are in the habit of not taking yourself too seriously, then why give a crap if no one else does as well?

But I know from experience that when life really gets you down, it is easy to take on an over-serious and somber tone. Why not dress in black from head to toe, ala Johnny Cash, at the same time? Yea, act like you’re going to a funeral or something….your own funeral! You could even hum a bar or two of Folsom Prison Blues while you’re at it. But if you allow problems to sap all the fun out of your life, then you might as well just call it quits. However, I really don’t want to do that just yet. Yea, I’ve had some setbacks lately, but hey who hasn’t. One thing’s for sure. Costa Rica is a perfect place to really see the humor in life. It is everywhere here. It is perhaps the funniest place on earth. And a funny place can actually become a fun place if you don’t make the mistake of taking it all, including yourself, too damn seriously. Go with the flow. Laugh a lot, live a lot and don’t forget to give a lot. There is no more positive force in life than a good hearty laugh out loud….it is good for the lungs, the heart, the mind and the soul. Don’t make the mistake of walking around this place with a dark cloud hovering over your head…these days, there’s enough of that in the sky above already. Make sure the sun is always shining on the inside and the best way to do that is not to take yourself, or life in general, too seriously. Pura Vida!

Package Costa Rica se está entrevistando ahora mismo que Pablo se está yendo para cosas más grandes y mejor. ¿Quién puede culparlo? Él ha sido un empleado de confianza, honrada y trabajadora. Voy a decir el mejor que he tenido aquí en Costa Rica y le deseo muy bien. Entrevisté a un expatriado, el otro día, alrededor de la misma edad que yo. En realidad vino a Costa Rica en la misma época que yo. Mientras estaba sentado allí escuchando a su saga de Costa Rica, en las inmortales palabras de Yogi Berra, que fue sin duda “deja vu de nuevo.” Inspiró a ese hechizo de la mañana de ayer sensiblería que salió como mi Oda a la Expat. Sí, bueno, no pretendía ser un aspirante a Walt Whitman. Todo lo que me hizo pensar esta mañana que sólo parece que a veces la gente toma la vida un poco demasiado en serio. Yo incluido. De vez en cuando vale la pena aclarar sólo un poco y abrir los ojos para ver cómo la vida es realmente gracioso. Y la recompensa es aún mayor cuando se ve cómo es usted realmente divertido. En una búsqueda de no tomarse la vida demasiado en serio, es una gran idea para empezar con uno mismo. Me duele mucho menos que reír y burlarse de sí mismo en lugar de dejar que otros lo hagan por usted. Y la gente que se toman demasiado en serio suelen ser los más selectos de las víctimas finales de las rutinas de la noche de comedia y mezquino fresco oficina chit-chat. En realidad, si usted está en el hábito de no tomarte demasiado en serio, ¿por qué doy una mierda, si nadie más lo hace como así?

Pero sé por experiencia que cuando la vida realmente te da un golpe, es fácil de asumir un tono más serio y sombrío. ¿Por qué no se visten de negro de pies a cabeza, al estilo de Johnny Cash, al mismo tiempo? Sí, actuar como si fueras a un funeral o algo …. tu propio funeral que es. Incluso se puede tararear la melodía de Folsom Prison Blues. Pero si usted permite que los problemas de la savia de toda la diversión de tu vida, entonces usted puede ser que también acaba de darse por vencido. Sin embargo, la verdad es que no quiero hacer eso todavía. Sí, he tenido algunos reveses últimamente, pero bueno, que no tiene. Una cosa es segura. Costa Rica es un lugar perfecto para ver realmente el humor en la vida. Está en todas partes aquí. Es tal vez la más divertido lugar en la tierra. Y un lugar divertido puede llegar a ser un lugar divertido si no cometen el error de tomarlo todo, incluyéndote a ti mismo, demasiado maldito en serio. Ir con la corriente. Ríase mucho, vive mucho y no te olvides de dar un montón. No hay fuerza más positiva en la vida de una buena risa abundante en voz alta …. es bueno para los pulmones, el corazón, la mente y el alma. No cometa el error de caminar por este lugar con una nube negra se cierne sobre su cabeza … en estos días, hay bastante de eso en el cielo por encima ya. Asegúrese de que el sol siempre brilla en el interior y la mejor manera de hacerlo es no tomar usted mismo, o la vida en general, demasiado en serio. Pura Vida!
