Why O-W-S? here’s an answer for ya…..

I have been writing in this blog for “years” now (yea, years) that capitalism has “run amuck” (or amok, or however you want to spell it). There is this mainstream line of thought in the U.S. (and other parts of the “developed” world) that rampant consumerism supported by capitalism run amuck is the mainstream or normal way to think and live. That our lives should be geared towards this idea and that anyone who teaches or preaches differently is weird and out of the mainstream. You know I live in Costa Rica so I am not 100% tuned in to what is going on in the U.S., but I do stay relatively informed. And, you know what, I just heard about this Occupy Wall Street protest this morning….after it has been going on for over a week. I believe the reason no one is reporting on it is because of this idea that consumerism and capitalism run amuck are sacred cows that have to be protected at all costs…..no one wants to see or hear a bunch of rowdy college kids rebelling against the excesses of million dollar bonuses and golden parachutes. That’s what our society was built upon….the capitalistic idea that I should do everything I can to grab as big a piece of the capitalistic pie as I can and if I can grab the whole damn thing…..better still….and then make sure I show off to the neighbors that mine is bigger than theirs. But baby as Dylan presciently proclaimed so long ago, “the times they are a changin.” Revolutions against greed and excess are taking place all over the world and now even in that smug corner of the universe known as Wall Street….the so-called bastion of capitalism. If the folks who are occupying it have their way, it may become the “last bastion.” The question everyone wants to ask is why and what? Why are they doing this and what do they want? As you might guess, I have an opinion on both. They are doing it because they feel that too few are empowered to acquire too much at the expense of too many. What do they want? For that to stop. For their voice to be heard and for the powers that be to stop the empowerment. And start showing more concern about things that matter to normal people and to a planet that is suffering greatly from the excess that emanates from Wall Street. That, I believe, is why and what. But if you really want to know….cover the damn story!

He estado escribiendo en este blog de “años” ahora (sí, años) que el capitalismo ha “volverse loco” (o fuera de control, o como quiera que se escribe). No es esta la línea de la corriente principal de pensamiento en los EE.UU. (y otras partes del mundo “desarrollado”) que el consumismo desenfrenado con el apoyo de locura del capitalismo es la corriente principal de ejecución o de manera normal de pensar y vivir. Que nuestra vida debe estar orientada a esta idea y que cualquier persona que enseña o predica diferente, es raro y fuera de la corriente. Usted sabe que yo vivo en Costa Rica, así que no estoy al 100% en sintonía con lo que está sucediendo en los EE.UU., pero se quedan relativamente informado. Y, ¿sabes qué, yo sólo escuché sobre este muro de protesta “Occupy Wall Street” esta mañana …. después de que ha estado sucediendo por más de una semana. Creo que la razón no es una presentación de informes sobre que se debe a la idea de que el consumismo y la locura correr el capitalismo son vacas sagradas que tienen que ser protegidos a toda costa ….. nadie quiere ver o escuchar un montón de niños ruidosos de la universidad rebelarse contra los excesos de millones de bonos en dólares y los paracaídas de oro. Eso es lo que nuestra sociedad se basa en la idea capitalista …. que yo debería hacer todo lo posible para agarrar como un gran pedazo del pastel capitalista que pueda y si puedo tomar toda la maldita cosa ….. mejor aún …. y luego asegurarse de que mostrar a los vecinos que la mía es más grande que el de ellos. Pero como Dylan proféticamente proclamó hace mucho tiempo, “los tiempos están cambiando”. Revoluciones contra la avaricia y el exceso se llevan a cabo en todo el mundo y ahora ni siquiera en ese rincón petulante del universo conocido como Wall Street …. el bastión de los llamados del capitalismo. Si la gente que lo está ocupando con la suya, que puede convertirse en el “último bastión”. La pregunta que todo el mundo quiere preguntar es por qué y qué? ¿Por qué están haciendo esto y lo que es lo que quieren? Como puede imaginar, no tengo una opinión sobre ambos. Lo están haciendo porque creen que muy pocos tienen la facultad de adquirir demasiado a expensas de muchos. ¿Qué quieren? Para que se detenga. Para que su voz sea escuchada y para los poderes fácticos para detener el poder. Y empezar a mostrar una mayor preocupación por las cosas que importan a la gente normal y un planeta que está sufriendo mucho por el exceso que emana de Wall Street. Eso, creo yo, es por qué y qué. Pero si realmente quieres saber …. cubrir la historia maldita sea!
